Note: a small number of large schemes contain the majority of members. Many of these may be members of more than one scheme. For example, someone may be an “active” member of one scheme and a “deferred” member of several other schemes.

The 200 or so largest schemes, with average assets of around £2¼ billion as at mid-2000, are clearly individually very substantial players in the investment arena. They represent about two-thirds of all the assets held by private sector occupational pension schemes. Around 1,500 large and medium-sized schemes have assets above £50 million, and therefore pension schemes form a substantial part of the investment community.
The highest figure for assets per scheme member occurs among the smallest schemes – this can be explained by considering that these are often arrangements set up for a few highly-paid executives in a company (the so-called "Top Hat" schemes).
